3 Packing Mistakes To Avoid When Getting Items Ready For Storage

by Madison Holland

When you are getting items ready to put in storage, you want to make sure everything is securely packaged up. Packing your items securely will help keep your items safe when in storage.

Mistake #1: Not Using the Right Materials

When you are packing up items to put into storage, you will want to make sure you use the right packing materials. You will not want to use trash bags or old cardboard boxes to put your items into. You are going to want to invest in brand-new, heavy-duty moving boxes. You may also want to invest in some heavy-duty plastic stackable boxes as well for some items.

Additionally, you will want to make sure you have the right fill material for keeping things safe. You are going to need packing paper and bubble wrap. You may also need packing peanuts or extra soft materials, like towels or shirts, to wrap things up. For your furniture, you are going to want to invest in some furniture covers as well.

Mistake #2: Not Filling & Sealing Boxes Properly

When you pack up your boxes, you are going to want to pack them properly. Inside of each box, you are going to want to have a base level of protective material. Then, you will want to pack the heaviest items on the box on the bottom and put the lighter items on top. You are going to want to use packing material to create layers and cushions between each item. You will also want to make sure that you add enough packing material so things don't move around.

Simultaneously, you don't want to pack boxes so that they are too heavy to move. You also don't want them bursting at their seams. When a box is packed up, you are going to want to tape it tightly.

Mistake #3: Not Labeling Your Boxes

Finally, you are going to want to label each box. You should write the general category of items in the box on the top of the box. You are also going to want to write if the item is fragile or needs special handling. On the side, write a detailed list of what is inside the box so you can find exactly what you are looking for when you need it.

If you use the right packing supplies, properly fill up each box, seal the boxes well, and label them, your boxes will make it through their time in storage, and you will not have any trouble finding your items in your storage unit. Look for a storage unit near you that you can use.
